Four-Season Cottage Garden

Reimagining an aging landscape with year-round structure and seasonal color.

This project transformed an aging landscape into a four-season cottage garden designed to provide long-term beauty without demanding intensive maintenance. Existing planting beds had become overgrown and lacked cohesion, while challenging site conditions—including clay soils, varying sun exposure, and persistent wildlife pressure—limited suitable plant choices. The homeowners wanted a landscape that felt colorful and abundant throughout the year while remaining practical to care for and aligned with the character of the property.

The design combines flowering shrubs, evergreen structure, and carefully selected perennials to provide continuous interest from spring through winter. Layers of color, texture, and bloom were arranged to create the relaxed appearance of a traditional cottage garden while maintaining a clear organizational framework. Repeating colors and plant forms establish visual continuity between the front and back yards without relying on formal symmetry, allowing each area to feel connected while retaining its own identity.

Existing mature trees, hydrangeas, and other landscape assets were preserved where practical, helping the new design build upon the property's established character while minimizing unnecessary removal and replacement. Strategic additions introduce seasonal focal points, strengthen the landscape structure, and improve the overall balance of the planting beds. Plant selections were chosen not only for their ornamental value, but also for their ability to perform reliably within the site's environmental conditions.

The result is a landscape that feels established, organized, and full throughout the seasons. By prioritizing site-appropriate plants, thoughtful plant placement, and long-term sustainability, the design delivers reliable performance, year-round interest, and a manageable maintenance burden for the homeowner. The finished landscape demonstrates how a garden can be both visually rich and practical, creating lasting value through design decisions grounded in the realities of the site.
